TREASURY CHAMBERS C O
19963 April 1919.
İRE REC -
APR 19
sir,
I have laid before the Lords Commissioners of
His Majesty's Treasury Mr. Grindle's letter of the 89th
Lov ultimo (19121/1919) enclosing a copy of a telegram from
the officer administering the Government of Hong Kong on the subject of the shipment of gold from Australia to
Hong Kong.
In reply I am to request you to inform the Secretary of State for the Colonies that Their Lordships do not consider that the import of sovereigna into
Hong Kong should be prohibited.
The question whether or not a prohibition of
export from Australia may be desirable is one for the
Commonwealth Government to consider. It should, however,
be noted in this connection that the Government of New
Zealand now proposes to remove its embargo on the export af
gold and in the event of the danger of serious loss of
gold from Australasia being apprehended, it would be
desirable that the Governments of the Commonwealth and
the Dominion should act in consultation.
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
I am,
sir,
Your obedient Servant,
Walradling
